Engagement and marriage: 8 signs that you are ready

Engagement and marriage: 8 signs that you are ready

When are we ready to get engaged? In our mid 20s or the beginning of our 30s? When is the right time to get engaged? What do I need to be sure of before I ask her, if she wants to marry me?

These 8 signs show that you are ready to get engaged and therefore also for the upcoming marriage.

1. Having plans for the future

She wants to live in New York, Tokyo and London and focus on her career and enjoy her freedom.

He wants a cosy home in a small town – garden, dog and kids included.

That does not sound like a good base for a long and relaxed marriage and very likely isn’t. In order to get married you need to know your own wishes and those of your partner.

You don't need to reveal every little secret, which helps to keep any relationship exciting.

However, a similar plan and goal for the future, which you both want to achieve should exist in a relationship.

Should there be different plans for the future it's important to talk, understand and compromise.

If you've successfully made plans for your future together you have a great base which is important for a happy marriage.

2. To be able to rely on each other

A relationship has its edges as you don’t always have the same opinion, which is absolutely fine.

However, at the end of the day both partners should be able to rely on each other.

Reliability brings security and stability into a relationship and therefore into the lives of the two people involved.

Do you have each other’s backs and can you count on each other? That’s a great sign that your relationship is ready for the next step.

Mutual trust is one of the clearest signs that you're ready.

3. Not having to change

It is the best feeling in the world, to be loved just the way you are.

If you can be yourself and don’t have to change around your partner you are very lucky! Is the relationship based on respect, acceptance and mutual understanding? Can you both be together and be relaxed without having to change who you really are? Then this is a wonderful sign that you are both ready.

4. Trust each other

Being a little bit jealous sometimes is part of many relationships and some degree of jealousy is nothing to worry about.

It shows how important your partner is to you and how much it would hurt you to lose them.

However, it is important not to forget that trust and understanding supports a good relationship.

If you constantly mistrust your partner or they mistrust you will not find happiness in this relationship.

A mutual trust base is important for a long and happy marriage. Mutual trust is one of the strongest of the 8 signs that you are ready.

When should we get engaged? How long should we wait with the wedding?

To be honest: There is no right or wrong and no rule to stick to. Some couples only get engaged after ten years. Others  get engaged after a few weeks or get married straight away. Here is some guidance if you need it.

Still waiting? But not too long…

If you both want to get married, don’t wait too long. With time couples get comfortable and that can end in you missing out on this beautiful day in life together.

Of course, it always depends on your budget, age and other private circumstances. Couples should choose a time that suits them both.

Therefore: Don’t run into something but also – don‘t wait too long.

If you love your partner and you are sensitive towards her you will know when the time is right. And when we think about it, the most beautiful wedding are the ones where you can see and feel the love.

How long should there be between a proposal and the wedding?

The time between a proposal and wedding is chosen individually by the couples. We've noticed one thing:

An engagement ring – a classic sign of the engagement- clearly shows how serious two people are about their decision to get married. And we've discovered, that the time between the proposal and the wedding is generally shorter if the partner receives a ring than it is if two people just verbally agree to get married.

According to a survey, which we've been conducting regularly with our customers since 2014, wedding preparations take two to six months. The average time between a proposal and wedding is therefore four months.

6. Being a better person

There are people that bring out the best in you. If you inspire one another and awake the best in each other you will very likely have a happy future together.

It does not always have to be the big things. Maybe she is a little tidier when he is around because she knows that he likes it neat and tidy?

Or he shops more sustainably because he knows it is important to her? Learning from each other and making experiences together enriches your relationship.

At the end of the day, anyone can ask themselves this question: Do I like myself the way I am, when I am with my partner? Does he help me to be a better version of myself?

7. Knowing one another

Experiences with our partner make the relationship special. Maybe some of these situations are familiar to you:

Before eight o'clock and without a hot, delicious coffee in your hand, you shouldn’t speak to her.
Only when the kitchen is clean and neat again after dinner the lady of the house can relax and is ready to enjoy the TV for the evening.

Couples who know each other and their flaws are less likely to experience misunderstandings. An open communication and understanding for each other form the basis for this.

8. The heart says yes!

Your heart decides if you are ready for to propose or not.

We do not recommend you totally stop thinking, however we do recommend you listen to your gut feeling when it comes to the proposing.

Just let your feelings make the decision. If you listen to your feelings you'll quickly find the right answer: Do you want to have your partner by your side for the rest of your life? Yes, then you are definitely ready to get engaged.

9. Making each other happy

It sometimes sounds so simple, but it is one of the most important aspects of a happy marriage. To make each other happy.

For some that means giving each other space. For others it means sharing everything with each other.

One thing is for sure: if you are happy in your relationship it can be seen as a true gift and can therefore be appreciated.

If you found happiness in your relationship you should ask yourself: Why wait? Take the first step towards your future and ask her life's most beautiful question.
